First Day in Houston

So, I'm here in Houston to pull an exhibition out of a repurposed prison, so I thought I'd share a bit of my trip with y'all.

Stack o' yearbooks.

A crawdad senses its imminent demise.

The aftermath, complete with gore-stained fingers.

The air was warm and smelled like alfalfa.

My hotel, looking far more fancy than it is.

My Time in Louisville: A Brief Pictorial History

klaatu barada nikto, y'all!

Gort from The Day the Earth Stood Still, seen at the Robots exhibit at the Louisville Science Center - my reason for being here in the first place.

Outside LSC, a giant dish made of small mirrors looms over the entrance. How could I pass that up?

Tiny anti-skateboard spikes embedded into the sloping staircase outside the Louisville city hall.

Architecture - old and new.

My hotel lobby, complete with hovering alien observation probe.

Those particular elevators had a rapid rate of ascent and made for an exhilarating ride after sampling some of Kentucky's finest bourbon.

Louisville, I didn't expect much from you, but you didn't disappoint. Maybe I'll catch the Derby some day.  Until then ...

This is the second time I've found an abandoned copy of Shutter Island on a flight within the last month.

Must be a scintillating read. :-/

Wait ... What?

Who in their right mind would name a coffee chain after a cruel pagan god?

Oh wait, it's just Russian. Nevermind. Can I get a ... umm ... "Sacrificial Virgin Latte"? Great. Thanks.

The Toy District

Heidi and I visited the Toy District in rainy downtown LA today. We were in pursuit of a grip of bouncy balls that light up with blinking LED lights when bounced (details later). This was her first time to this particular section of downtown and she was impressed, her quote of the day being "Is there anything you can't get here?"

My answer to that was, "No."

I'd bet money that there's more plastic per square foot in this location than anywhere else in the world.

These worlds

As my first foray into Augmented Reality, I downloaded Wikitude for my iPhone. This is a screenshot of the first question it asked me when I opened it.

Seems appropriate for Augmented Reality, I'd say, as though it were ripped directly from some cyber epic penned by William Gibson. Good job, Wikitude, for adding some mysticism to my technology.

Menchies

Stopped by Menchies with Heidi and snapped this pic.

While the frozen yogurt fad doesn't incorporate my favorite desserts (here's lookin' at you, Tiramisu), they certainly get points for being ridiculously customizable. Any guesses as to what I mixed together? My base was angel food cake flavor and milk chocolate flavor.
